The inn was quiet, save for the soft creaking of the wooden beams overhead and the distant murmur of voices from the common room below. The faint scent of straw and wood smoke mingled with the more distant aroma of cooked food drifting up from the kitchen.

Jamie lay on his bed, staring up at the low ceiling, his mind a whirl of worry and exhaustion. Sleep had been elusive.

Calyx, Tallis, and Ione were already resting, their forms barely visible in the faint light of the three moons filtering through the small window.

The room was simple, with rough-hewn furniture and faded tapestries hanging from the walls. The inn, like the rest of the world they had travelled to, was primitive compared to their home.

He had been replaying the events of their mission in his mind. Calyx’s casual attitude toward killing was bad enough, but then there was the matter of the Celestial Architects—entities that seemed to hold the fate of multiple galaxies in their grasp.

As Jamie turned over in his bed, trying to find a more comfortable position, a faint rustling sound caught his attention. He sat up, his senses alert, as the door to their room creaked open slowly.

The silhouette of a slim, young man slipped inside, moving with quiet, deliberate steps. As the figure came into the light of the small oil lamp on the bedside table, Jamie’s breath caught in his throat. It was a teenage boy, no older than sixteen or seventeen, with dark, unruly hair and olive skin. His sharp eyes scanned the room before settling on Jamie.

He carried an enormous book, bound in deep purple leather with an intricate design of a triangle sandwiched between a raining cloud and a river on its cover.

Jamie stood cautiously. “Who are you?”

“The Cosmic Spider.” He held out the book. “This is for you.” The teenager finally met Jamie’s gaze. “It’s the Book of the Water Warriors. It holds the knowledge you seek—knowledge that can help you stop the Celestial Architects and protect the dragons.”

Jamie’s pulse quickened. “You’re the Cosmic Spider?”

The young man nodded, his expression serious. “Yes, but that’s just a name I use to keep myself hidden. The Celestial Architects can’t find me, and it’s better that way.”

Before Jamie could press further, the Cosmic Spider turned to leave. “Wait!” Jamie called after him, but the teenager was already slipping out the door, leaving it ajar behind him.

Jamie stared after him for a moment, then glanced down at the book in his hands, its cover cool to the touch despite the warmth of the room.

The movement behind him made him turn. The wayfarers had woken. Calyx was already on her feet. Tallis and Ione were close behind.

“Was that him?” Tallis asked, his deep voice breaking the silence.

Jamie hesitated before holding up the heavy book bound in purple leather. “Yes. This is the Book of the Water Warriors, I guess.”

Calyx stepped closer, her eyes narrowing as she examined the book. “He just gave it to you?”

“I guess so.”

Calyx tilted her head.
